Map of the Dead

Map of the Dead (2024) visualizes the journey of consciousness at the moment of death. This project attempts to demystify death by addressing the gap in the scientific and cultural representation of mortality. The output is an artwork which utilize historical symbols reconstructed into a contemporary context.

... the Death that comes from elsewhere, strange and inhuman.” — Simone De Beauvoir (1985).

Inspired from Beauvoir, the inhabitants of the map are visualised in inhuman form, communicating the strange experience of confronting death. The creatures are designed based on some of the symbols representing memento mori such as skulls, fading flowers, rotting fruit, hourglasses, clocks, watches or burning candle.
